Other shamed racists

-

Here are some of the racists that have been exposed in recent years:

Penny Sparrow – the former KwaZulu-Natal real estate agent became the face of racist rants when she put up a post calling black people “monkeys” in 2016. She was found guilty by the Equality Court and ordered to pay a fine of R150 000.

In 2017 Phillip Roodt called black people who were enjoying themselves at a beach in KZN “cockroaches”. Roodt said black people who were on the beach had stolen the money to be able to afford it. His fate is not clear.

In 2016, Chris Hart, an economist, was suspended from Standard Bank for a tweet that was said to be having racist undertones. Hart eventually resigned from the company. Matthew Theunissen took to social media in 2016 on a racist rant against former sports minister Fikile Mbalula’s ban against sports associations hosting international events for failure to meet transformation targets. Theunissen proceeded to call Mbalula and the South African government the racial k-word. He later apologised in an open later to Mbalula and was ordered to complete community service.

Vicki Momberg was earlier this year found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison by the Equality Court for her racist tirade against a police officer in 2016. Momberg was found guilty on four counts of crimen injuria after she went viral on social media calling Constable David Mkhondo the k-word over 40 times. This was after Mkhondo tried to assist her after a smash-andgrab incident. The guilty verdict was seen as a historic turning point in South Africa.
