Striker walks off the pitch after fans torment him again

- By Sihle Ndebele

Under-fire Thamsanqa Gabuza caused a stir last night with his shocking behaviour as Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways by beating Black Leopards 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Upon assisting Pirates to take the lead via an own goal from Thivhavhudzi Ndou, Gabuza celebrated by taking off his jersey and throwing it into the crowd. He then walked off and, upon his return in the second half, was handed a second yellow card which saw him dismissed.

Gabuza has always found himself on the receiving end of Bucs’ supporters for failing to convert chances. It was the same story last night when the former Golden Arrows man was booed for missing three chances early in the first period before losing it.

The visitors should have taken the lead as early as the first minute of the match but winger Vincent Pule saw his one-on-one effort come off the face of Lidoda Duvha goalkeeper Rotshidzwa Muleka.

Just when Leopards thought they’d salvage a draw, Pule cheered the visiting crowd with a wonderful finish after an enterprising pass from Xola Mlambo in the midfield, doubling the advantage for Milutin Sredojevic’s troops, five minutes after the hour mark.

The second goal proved a wake-up call for the home side because shortly after conceding, they started to show purpose in their play, especially with quick passes in the final third. Leopards’ dominance midway through the second half was rewarded when second-half substitute Joseph Mhlongo’s volley beat Siyabonga Mpontshane to make it 2-1.
