Maiden MDC glory the target for Bucs

Qhogi has built exciting squad of young talent

- By Sihle Ndebele

New Orlando Pirates MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) coach Mandla Qhogi trusts his sheer grit and determination will set him apart from all his predecessors who had brief stints at the club but all failed to win the reserve league title.

Qhogi, 34, took charge of the Buccaneers’ MDC side before the start of the current campaign, replacing Rayaan Jacobs who joined Cape Town City to become coach Benni McCarthy’s second assistant in the senior team.

Qhogi is the fifth Pirates MDC coach in five years. He’s following in the footsteps of the likes of Augusto Palacios, Zipho Dlangalala, Benson Mhlongo and Jacobs.

“I know that all the previous coaches didn’t last. I want to change that. I believe that my determination and dedication will help me succeed,” said Qhogi who joined Pirates in 2005.

“Before being appointed as the MDC coach, I had been working with the Under-12 team. I have experience and I am optimistic I can help the team win their maiden MDC title. I know the culture of Pirates in and out.”

Qhogi holds a CAF A coaching licence. He has ambitions to work his way up to one day coach a Premiership side.

“My dream is to coach a topflight club some time in the next three years. I will be patient and continue with my hard work. Football is my passion,” noted Qhogi.

However, the youth mentor is still winless this term after two defeats. He’s eager to register his first victory when his charges clash with the 2017 champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Makhulong Stadium on Monday.

“The results have not been forthcoming. We are a new team, we brought in many young players because we are in a building process. The boys are motivated to beat Sundowns, and winning will be the turning point in our campaign.”

FIXTURES (all at Makhulong Stadium unless stated) Tomorrow: Maritzburg v Chippa, Harry Gwala Stadium (10am); Leopards v Baroka, Thohoyandou Stadium (10am); PLK City v Arrows, Old Peter Mokaba Stadium (10am).

Sunday: Wits v AmaZulu, Bidvest Stadium (10am); FS Stars v CPT City, Goble Park (10am). Monday: SuperSport United v Celtic (11am); Highlands v Chiefs (1pm); Orlando Pirates v Sundowns (3pm).
