SuperSport United midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s cup record in Durban is outstanding – just one loss in seven finals.

For the past 10 years, “Yeye” has been involved in seven cup finals in Banana City.

He’s been on the losing side just once (see sidebar).

“Every time it’s announced that we will be playing in Durban there’s this excitement in me to say that the chances of me winning another final are higher, because there’s some luck nje that I have there,” Letsholonyane told the Sowetan yesterday ahead of the MTN8 decider against Cape Town City at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (7pm).

“I’ve experienced love in Durban from my days at Kaizer Chiefs and the people there still support me.”

Letsholonyane, 36, was part of the Matsatsantsa a Pitori team that won the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 in Durban last year. Despite his successes over the years, he remains hungry for more winners’ medals and hopes he could be SuperSport’s lucky charm in his happy hunting ground, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Definitely, it’s the reason we play football – to win things – and as long as I’m still playing, being in a final is exciting. I want to win things and contribute to the team’s success. You do that by winning trophies. So for me, I want to keep winning stuff.

“If I sat at home and be satisfied looking at my medals, I would have called it quits.”
