Hunt revival grabs Pitso’s attention

Coach gears up for tight battle

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has lavished praise on his Bidvest Wits counterpart Gavin Hunt, which suggests that he feels the university club are over the slump from last season.

Wits have looked revitalised this season after enduring a horrendous run in the previous campaign where they finished in 13th position. Wits are now top of the table with 16 points.

Sundowns will host the former champions at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday (3.30pm).

“They look organised. They are very professional and as you know they have a good coach in Gavin,” Mosimane said.

“When he [Hunt] wants a result, he will take it. They will never give us space like [Bloemfontein] Celtic did, they will be on top of us.”

The Brazilians were held to a goalless draw in midweek by Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium. It was their fourth draw this season.

Sundowns have continued playing with their offensive philosophy but have been let down by their finishing in front of goal.

The former Bafana Bafana mentor feels that the battle for the league title will be another scrappy one.

“Again, I don’t think we will get the 71 points record the way we started, but nobody is going to get it,” he said. “I think it will be like last season – about 60 or 61 points – because who’s consistent?”

With the results not going their way at the moment, he insists that he will stick with his playing principles.

“As long as it doesn’t have an X-factor then it doesn’t mean anything. You can play scrappy and not even know how you won but that is not how we play.

“We have won playing this way so we are not about to change.”
