Zikode finally living her dream

Vocalist brings fresh sound to industry

- By Lesley Mofokeng

After years plying her trade as a backing vocalist, Nomcebo Zikode is finally striking out on her own.

After matric, she packed her bags and left her native Hammarsdale in KwaZulu-Natal to head for Johannesburg in search of a career in music.

A talent search on Ukhozi FM in 2003 headed by Tshepo Nzimande saw her break through as she backed the likes of Lundi, S’fiso, Kholeka, Nhlanhla Nciza and Zahara.

Many years later, she teamed up with DJ Ganyani on Emazulwini. Meeting Open Mic Records meant the start of her solo career.

Today, her Afro-house single Imizamo Yami is fast gaining her the attention. The song is about unrequited love, either from a romantic partner, a family member or a friend.

Zikode worked with Bongo Beat on the song.

“Music is what I loved as a child. Even at school when asked what I wanted to do when I’m grown up, I said I would like to sing and I was laughed at, because everyone thought you couldn’t study singing.

“Only to find out when I moved to Joburg that it was possible.”

She, however, studied information technology, which she says helped her navigate the world of computers and technology.

Zikode is thankful for the gigs she shared with the heavyweights in the music industry.

“I’ve learned that you have to be grounded, focused and respect people and time, and also to never forget how you were brought up.”

She says she is bringing a fresh sound to the industry, as well as music that will be enjoyed by both young and old people.
