Masote leads from the front
Conductor set for Sand Park Classics
Violinist and conductor Kutlwano Masote will lead a group of orchestras and soloists this weekend when the annual Sand Park Classics take place at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State.
Happening for the second time, Sand Park Classics is regarded as one of the premier events that attract music lovers to the scenic town of Clarens.
Masote does not only see the event as a musical entertainment but a continuation of a love affair with music.
He has been conducting at different events since 2006.
He says since South African opera singers are doing well overseas, it was time to showcase them to local audience.
“It is a privilege for me to be a director and conductor of the show. I am excited by the talent we are featuring this year.
“I have balanced the line-up of experienced opera singers with young ones just to give them a platform.
“I am excited by the depth we have in the country.”
Masote says that the aim of the show is to put together the country’s best talent while promoting the park and the area at the same time.
“Our aim is to do something that people will never forget. We just want to capture their imagination through the classical and opera sounds.
“This time we have chosen some mellow sounds that will entertain the crowd.”
The event features tenor Aubrey Lodewyk and soprano Caroline Nkwe accompanied by the Free State Symphony Orchestra with a special appearance by Gauteng Opera.
The fun starts today with a jazz concert featuring musicians such as Nduduzo Makhathini and Lindiwe Maxolo. Tomorrow, classical music lovers will be entertained.
