Davids adamant his job as United coach is secure

‘It’s only rumours, nothing,’ he says

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has scoffed at rumours that he’s at risk of being sacked following the club’s shaky start to the season. There has been speculation that Davids was going to be shown the door had he lost against Orlando Pirates at the weekend. But the Team of Choice put in a gutsy performance to earn a point after a goalless draw.

Perhaps that encounter was enough to prolong Davids stay at the club, for now.

“It’s only rumours, nothing. There’s no truth to it. I have got the full support of the chairman [Farook Kadodia]... that’s really the situation. They know the work that has been put in. It’s there for us to just turn it around,” said Davids during his post match interview at Orlando Stadium. “I am lucky to have a chairman and the board at Maritzburg United. Last season I was in a similar situation... perhaps another chairman of a club sacked me at that time after 10 games... 10 points and then you end up fourth and get into the cup final, that’s the support I have been getting from the club.”

The KwaZulu-Natal-based side has only won one of their 11 league outings this season, with seven draws and three loses. Their only win was away to high-riding Bloemfontein Celtic in September, meaning they’ve gone six matches without a win.

“It’s about finding the right formula. We wanted at least 18 points in 14 games in that area, we’ll push to fight for every point. It’s nine points left [before the end of the year] and we’ll fight for it,” noted Davids. With their next league clash against Mamelodi Sundowns postponed due to the Brazilians’ CAF Champions League involvement, the Team of Choice will have to wait for December 12 for their next fixture, against Black Leopards.
