Brazilians offer lessons for SA voters

-

I don’t know why would people vote for people they do not like. Brazil has a new president from a rightwing political party in Jair Blosonaro. The new president is known for being a homophobe. He is probably racist too. But believe it or not, Blosonaro was voted for by black, native and gay Brazilians.

I came across an article where people who surprisingly voted for his party were giving reasons why they did it. It was for compelling reasons. Just like in SA, Brazil was ruled by a popular left-wing workers’ party which brought Brazilians nothing but corruption. That culminated in former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva being jailed and his successor Dilma Rousseff impeached.

Just like Donald Trump in the US, Blosonaro used the ticket of putting Brazil first. He has promised investment and safety for Brazilians. The situation in Brazil mirrors that of ours. The only difference is that Brazilians have done something about a political party that has taken them for granted for too long.

There’s no doubt that in SA we can do with a governing party that puts SA first. We want a party that will prioritise the economy, education and our safety.

One day, the ANC will rue missed opportunities when we vote for a party that prioritises bread and butter issues. Richardson Mzaidume
