Discord drowns Baroka victory parade
Cup sponsors fail to supply parade bus
Baroka did not allow a bungle from title sponsor Telkom to steal their thunder yesterday after their much-anticipated victory parade nearly didn’t happen.
The Limpopo outfit were due to hold the official parade after their historic Telkom Knockout victory last week- end but embarrassingly the sponsor failed to rent out a bus for the event.
Bakgaga ba Ga-Mphahlele had to step in to rescue the situation and organise their own bus to tour around Polokwane where hundreds of their fans waited. The club management were initially informed that the bus for the parade would be taken care of by sponsors Telkom.
An official from Telkom Lucinda Fletcher apologised to the club for the stuff-up. “I would like to apologise for the lack of planning from our side. We will definitely make it up to Baroka,” Fletcher said. Baroka made history by becoming the first club from the province to win a championship in the top flight when they defeated Orlando Pirates in the final in Port Elizabeth. Club officials and fans felt that the club was being undermined by the sponsors. The general feeling was that for such a historic accomplishment, Baroka deserved to be shown respect. Nonetheless the team went to the royal house to show off the R4m trophy. Club owner Khurishi Mphahlele said it was a proud moment to finally deliver the cup to the people.
“The people of Limpopo deserve this and I have prayed for this day, and it’s finally here,” Mphahlele said. “We came here to show this trophy to our king and queen because this is where it all started. As a team we are grateful for all the blessings.”
