Hip-hop artist Pitch Black Afro has been arrested in connection with the death of his wife.

The rapper’s wife, Catherine “Trisha” Modisane, 41, died on December 31 2018. According to a source, Pitch Black Afro – real name Thulani Ngcobo – phoned police after his wife died at a B&B accommodation in Yeoville, Johannesburg. Preliminary investigations found that she had died of natural causes. An inquest docket was opened. However, the pathologist leading the case later found she had died from unnatural causes and a murder investigation was subsequently initiated. Ngcobo’s manager Bheki Mlambo said he did not know the details of Modisane’s death but said she would be buried tomorrow. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday in Meadowlands, Soweto. “I found out about her death in the new year. The family does not have an official statement yet because they are still meeting on the matter.” Mlambo would not divulge Ngcobo’s whereabouts but said he would not be able to speak to the media. Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said yesterday the case was under investigation. “There was an inquest opened but we changed that to murder. The suspect is being detained at Yeoville police station and will be appearing in the Hillbrow magistrate’s court [today].”

Pitch Black Afro shot to fame in 2004 with the release of a hugely popular album Styling Gel, which featured hits like Pitch Black Afro and Matofotofo. In a 2007 hit Neva Let U Go he sings the praises of Trisha who he mentions by name in the song, saying only death will separate them. His last album, Inte’mnandi, came out in 2014.
