Sun City hosts tennis tourney

Sixteen regional tennis clubs will converge at Sun City next week for the 2019 Growthpoin­t Top Guns National final event. The topline club tournament is set for a sophomore edition from next Friday to February 25. The leisure facility offers 11 world-class hard outdoor surface courts. “For Sun City to host such a topclass youth SA tennis event is an incredible honour and a feather in our cap as one of the top destinatio­ns in the country. I can proudly say that we have ticked all of the operationa­l and logistics boxes ahead of the tournament,” said tournament coordinato­r Pieter Hoeksma.

Cape run gets bronze status

The FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN has been awarded the Bronze label status by the IAAF. “We are thrilled to receive this fantastic accolade,” said Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports for the race taking place on May 19. “Our vision has always been to host a world-class event on South African soil. Runners of all ages and walks of life are invited to celebrate the magnificen­t city of Cape Town.” Celebratin­g its fifth anniversar­y this year, the Cape Town 12 ONERUN is the first of three events that make up the FNB “Run Your City Series.” Joburg will host the 10K CITYRUN on September 24 while Durban will close off the series with the 10K CITYSURFRU­N on October 13.

New long-term deal for Oblak

Puma Football has signed a long-term partnershi­p with Jan Oblak, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, who joins an extensive list of world-class goalkeeper­s wearing the sports company’s performanc­e footwear and equipment. Oblak has establish himself as one of the world’s leading goalkeeper­s, being voted the Spanish league’s best goalkeeper three times in a row. In recognitio­n of his achievemen­ts, Oblak’s club contract includes a ß100m (R1,6bn) buyout clause – making him technicall­y the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

Games to honour Cosatu leader

Gauteng department of sport and culture, working with the Merafong municipali­ty and Cosatu, will tomorrow host the inaugural edition of the annual Elijah Barayi Recreation­al Games. The initiative is part of recognisin­g and commemorat­ing the life and times of Cosatu’s founding president Barayi. From being the vice-president of National Union of Mineworker­s, he was elected the first president of Cosatu. The games will take place at Popo Molefe Stadium in Kokosi, Merafong. Lined-up activities include netball, soccer and indigenous games such as stick-fighting, morabaraba and more. – Sowetan Reporters
