Turffontein moves to Sunday

- By Racing Editor

The threat of more rain has forced the Turffontein meeting scheduled for tomorrow to be moved to Sunday. The meeting will start at 3pm with the last race off at 7.40pm. The 2018 G-BETS Summer Cup champion, Tilbury Fort, is expected to make a triumphant return to competitive racing when he lines up in Race 5, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m on the Standside track. He is a high quality thoroughbred and proved this fact when returning from a lengthy layoff of almost five months and still performing at a high enough level to give the highly rated Coral Fever tremendous cheek in the Charity Mile, beaten a rapidly diminishing 0.05 lengths into second place. The 77-day stint off the racetrack shouldn’t raise too many red flags because he beat Pilou in March last year in spite of returning from a three-month layoff – expect a similar performance. Tilbury Fort has an exceptional turn of foot and has a good record over this 1400m trip so can be trusted to win hav- ing competed twice for a win and a commendable second. If he can reproduce anything close to his Summer Cup triumph then he will show this lot a clean pair of heels. Captain Aldo is the model of consistency and there was a lot to like about his first effort after a two-month layoff when beaten 4.10 lengths by Zouaves over this course and distance. This Caption Al eight-year-old only shoulders 1.5kg more than Tilbury Fort which isn’t too much of a disadvantage, however, he will have to jump from the worst draw of all as opposed to his foes advantageous No 2. Considering he was drawn at No 13 in the Gauteng Guineas Tarry-trained Vontreo ran an absolute cracker, finishing 6.70 lengths behind National Park. And it didn’t help that this three-year-old was reported as being lame. This son of Mambo In Seattle tops the best-weighted column in Race 3, an Assessment Plate over 1600m and from a No 3 draw will be very hard to peg back. At the time of writing, Mike de Kocktrained Gin Fizz– a Soft Falling Rain newcomer – tops the betting boards at 13-10 to win Race 1, Fillies Juvenile Plate over 1000m.
