Sowetan

A little model of an iconic vehicle

- By BRENWIN NAIDU

Sowetan Motoring was invited to a product launch of a different kind last Friday. Though a significant car was on the agenda, the scale of events was decidedly small. How small are we talking?

About 7cm tall, 33cm long, 13cm wide and with 1,471 little pieces just raring to indent your unsuspecting feet when tending to a crabby child in the middle of the night.

At its only official SA store in Sandton City, iconic Danish toy company Lego took the wraps off its newest build, a 1967 Ford Mustang GT kit. Aficionados will note that this is not the first vehicular replication produced by Lego.

Other sets include the Bugatti Chiron, McLaren 720S, Aston Martin DB5, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Ferrari F40, among other machines you would expect to see on posters in girls’ and boys’ bedrooms. Partial grownups like me included.

The kit went on sale worldwide from 1 March, both online and at Lego outlets. It costs R2,299.

According to the custodians of the brand, it will take about six hours to build. The faithful impartation of detail from real thing to model is something to behold. Take note of the big block, 390-cubic-inch V8 under the bonnet.

It must be said that the option of a Highland Green colour option, à la Bullitt, would not have gone amiss. But there is scope for customisation. Included in the package is a supercharger, nitrous tank and rear spoiler for the additional downforce required when barreling down the parquet floors of the lounge.
