- By Patience Bambalele

After his debut on Mzansi Magic drama series eHostela, actor Swelihle Luthuli is keen for more roles.

Luthuli, from Adams Mission in Durban, who was acting for the first time in his life, is loving everything about the craft.

The young actor, who worked at McDonald’s restaurant for over a year, still cannot believe his luck after landing the role of Juba in the drama series flighted on Sunday nights.

The 22-year-old decided to take a chance when he saw an advert for auditions in the newspaper.

Luthuli says he was very intimidated when he went in because he was queuing with experienced actors.

He says he did not believe that he stood a chance of being picked.

“I knew very well that I didn’t have experience and I have never acted in my life, but I went there because I had nothing to lose.

“I just thought ‘let me do this just for the experience’. I was shocked when I got a call back.”

Luthuli plays the role of a troubled young man, Juba, who is the son of former inkabi (assassin) Skhosana (played by Mabutho Sithole).

He is from KwaMashu and joins brotherhood society AmaDelakufa, which is a group of assassins.

Juba joins ibutho at the time when there are many changes in the leadership, and his home.

His father gets killed while on the other side his sister falls deeply in love with a man who killed their father.

Luthuli says that since he was acting for the first time he is grateful for the support he got from all the actors and directors.

“I was star stuck at first and I started not to trust myself. But they really helped me, including the directors.”
