Dumisani Collins Enock Zwane, who was affectiona­tely known as Bafana, was born in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1953.

He was the last born and only son in the family of seven children born to Nkomencane and Idah Zwane.

Zwane started his primary school in Ladysmith and the family later relocated to Jabulani, Soweto, where he matriculat­ed at Morris Isaacson High School.

He studied medical technology at Madikoti College in Seshego, Limpopo, and moved to Medunsa in GaRankuwa to complete his diploma.

Zwane specialise­d in haematolog­y. After qualifying he worked at GaRankuwa Hospital. In 1987, he joined a pathology group at Lesedi Private Hospital in Soweto.

Zwane then went back to Medunsa and obtained his MBChB degree in 2000. He did his internship at GaRankuwa and Philadelph­ia hospitals.

He later opened a private practice in Ekangala and in Ebony Park near Tembisa. Zwane was an anointed jazz fanatic. He died on Saturday after a short illness.

He is survived by his six children and three sisters.
