Free seminars for Comrades novices
The Bonitas Comrades Novice Seminars will take place later this month in Joburg and Benoni. The seminars are specifically aimed at first-time Comrades Marathon runners. A panel of experts in the fields of medicine, sport psychology, dietetics as well as the official Comrades coach will provide invaluable advice, answer questions and support newbies in terms of complete preparation for the race. Entrance to the Novice Seminars is free and they will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at Randburg Harriers, Hoërskool Randburg in Joburg; and on Wednesday, March 27 at Benoni Northerns sports grounds.
Gauteng schools honoured
Excellence and outstanding achievement in sport for Gauteng-based schools were recognised at the eighth annual Gauteng School Sport Awards, held on Wednesday in Ekurhuleni. Athletics topped the charts and was named Sporting Code of the Year, while The Troyville Primary School U13 volleyball team nabbed Sport Team of the Year. “Recognition of all the hard work and successes in schools is paramount as it inspires further success and potential,” said Gauteng MEC for sport Faith Mazibuko. Montsi, Klopper to fly SA flag
The ITF/CAT U18 African Junior Closed Championship is drawing closer for the young South African tennis cohorts, who will be representing the country from March 11-16 in Marrakech, Morocco. It’s a prestigious tournament for young and upcoming talent to showcase their skills. SA is represented by a strong contingent, who include the dynamite Kholo Montsi and Joubert Klopper.
Masango, Ngcobo off to Epic
Acclaimed riders Sithembiso Masango and Mboneni Ngcobo have been called up to represent Team Land Rover at the 16th edition of the Absa Cape Epic set to start on March 17. Masango, who also rode in the team in 2017 and managed an impressive top-50 result last year, will replace French rugby union player Freddie Michalak. Masango’s team-mate Mboneni Ngcobo will replace Michalak’s teammate Jesse Wilson.
