The Harties cableway

Hiking up mountains isn’t for everybody. If you would like to see the view without working up a sweat, take the Harties cableway to the top. The cableway, which was recently refurbished with new gondolas, runs year round and offers amazing views of the Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam.

There is a restaurant at the top and a 1km trail called the Dassie Loop where you will have a chance to check out these little animals and maybe see vultures soaring on the air currents above the ridge. COST: R230 per person. See www.hartiescableway.co.za or phone 012-213-9910.

Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre

The cheetah is the fastest mammal in the world. When they are hunting, they can reach speeds of nearly 80km/h. Their speed has, however, not saved them from being critically endangered, and Ann van Dyk herself has spent many years conserving these beautiful hunters.

The centre offers a chance to see cheetahs up close, as well as wild dogs, caracals, vultures and other endangered mammals. There is also an early morning cheetah run when one of the cats chases a lure and shows off its incredible speed.

COST: R380 (adults), R280 (children 7-12 years old). Bookings are essential. See www.dewildt.co.za or e-mail bookings@dewildt.co.za

Quad biking and horse riding

For something a little different, head over to Horse Riding Adventures, which operates from a nearby farm where you can go quad biking, horse riding, play some paintball or even learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. The kids will love the quad bikes and the paintball.

There are various deals. You can just do quad biking or horse riding in a morning or spend a full day on the farm enjoying every experience – and a lunchtime braai.

COST: From R400 per person. See www.horseridingadventure.co.za or e-mail sybrand@horseridingadventure.co.za
