Pitso throws in PSL towel
Downs coach to now prioritise Champs League
In his usual boastful yet sarcastic self, disputatious Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has downplayed the importance of defending the league title, insisting the CAF Champions League remains their priority.
Mosimane made this declaration in the wake of their Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat away to Orlando Pirates, where Gabadinho Mhango’s goal won it for the hosts.
“We’ve got nine league titles, we’ve got one [left] to make it 10, so we can miss four league titles and still be leading [with more titles] neh?
“So it’s okay [to not defend it this season], I mean really? Are we doing that bad?
“There’s a Champions League, we’re top of the group… that’s the big one,” Mosimane said.
“This one [the Absa Premiership title] you can always gun for it and get it or miss it, I have fought for it with Chiefs for two years and I lost once, they [Chiefs] got tired… came Wits, they won it once, they got tired, Pirates came twice with Rulani [Mokwena] here two years in the row they came second, they got tired.”
Mosimane, who joined Downs in the middle of the 2012/13 term, can take pride in the fact that in seasons his side did not win the league championship, Downs have always been among the contenders even in the seasons where they didn’t win the title.
“Chiefs are back, but what is the common denominator for the past seven years? [Referring to the fact that Downs have been always among the chasing pack for the better part of his tenure]. Take a chill pill man, take a break,” the Brazilians mentor quipped.
The Brazilians’ journey in the league promises to get even trickier as they host Tshwane rivals, the in-form SuperSport United who are a point behind them, at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday .
“It’s a big one against SuperSport,” noted Mosimane.
