Chiefs face a tough game at Mbombela

TAB PUMPS R2 MILLION INTO 9 WEEKEND SOCCER POOLS

- By Mark Gleeson

There’s an amazing weekend ahead for TAB soccer customers with add-ins of R2 million to nine pools and a carryover Soccer 13 pool from tonight through Sunday.

The action starts tonight with a R500,000-added Soccer 10 pool set to soar above the R3 million mark, as well as cash-added Soccer 4 and 6 bets.

It’s also a big weekend for Kaizer Chiefs, who need to follow up on a recent victory when they square off against TS Galaxy on Sunday.

Chiefs must shudder every time they hear the name TS Galaxy, a legacy of their upset defeat in the Nedbank Cup final four years ago when they were humiliated by a then second-tier side.

Chiefs were all set to end their long trophy drought in what everyone assumed would be a routine assignment, but were beaten in the dying stages of the final in what remains one of the local game’s great upsets.

The next season it was even more calamitous when they squandered a massive lead in the PSL title race and were overtaken by Mamelodi Sundowns on the last day.

Matters have not got better for the club since and this Sunday they face Galaxy again, this time at Mbombela Stadium. Their hosts are fresh from registering a 4-0 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows, their biggest in the top flight to date, and boast one of the top defences in the league. Galaxy have conceded only 11 goals this season with only the top two sides in the table - Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay boasting better defensive records.

Chiefs, by contrast, have been leaking goals with 21 conceded in 18 games, making them one of the weakest defences in the 16-team league.

It means they will need a Herculean performance in Nelspruit on Sunday, but it is a chance to win and get a major morale boost at the same time.

Chiefs, like the rest of the chasing pack, can forget about any title aspirations and have admitted as much with Sundowns on course for a record-extending sixth successive championship.

But tomorrow Sundowns have stiff task away at Orlando Pirates, who handed them a stinging defeat with their 3-0 victory in Pretoria in October in the MTN8.

Now they will be looking to do it again on home turf as Sundowns make the short trip to the Orlando Stadium.

The 3-0 loss at Loftus Versfeld did expose fragility in the Brazilians’ defense, but it has since been comprehensively covered by a winning run. Since that loss Sundowns have gone on a 12-match winning streak and got to 50 points in record time, needing only 20 matches to get there.
