Welcome to the Punch
Director Eran Creevy has pulled off a tough crime thriller, with an excellent cast of British actors. It’s a classic cat-and-mouse tale that begins as a professional thief, Jacob Sternwood (Mark Strong), and his gang are in the midst of a heist. Top-cop Max Lewinsky (James McAvoy) is in hot pursuit and corners the thieves — but fails to capture Sternwood, who makes his escape to Iceland.
Six months later, Sternwood returns to England after a police attack on his son. Lewinsky, meanwhile, has remained obsessed with finally capturing him.
The cast is excellent, particularly Andrea Riseborough, who plays Lewinsky’s sidekick with subtlety and strength. The characters are deftly defined and the action is well plotted.
Planes
When Disney and Pixar work together, great things happen in their animation movies, but this effort is disappointing.
You will probably remember Cars (2006) and Cars 2 (2011). Planes more or less follows the same format. All they have done is give it wings, though it’s sweetly done.
The hero in this movie is Dusty (Dane Cook), a crop-dusting plane who has never flown much further than the boundaries of his farm — but, of course, he dreams of adventure.
When he enters a round-the-world race, the fun begins. If you are 10 years old, the thrills may last for the whole film.
