Wonder women
Celebrating women by talking about food and doing some yoga
270 women relished being served by apron-clad male waiters at the East Coast Lions Club Women’s Day event at the San Jose Hall in Greyville last Sunday afternoon.
The waiters — members of the service organisation — served high tea after an entertaining afternoon programme. ON THE GO: Speakers included Deena Govender, last year’s MasterChef winner, who made good on his promise to speak after cancelling at the last minute in 2012. He said he had been on the receiving end of some “choice words” from Lion Sundru Pillay as a result of last year’s no-show. He added that he nearly missed this year as well because he was participating in the Good Food & Wine Show in Durban, but feared Pillay’s wrath. Govender left immediately after speaking. ADDICTS: Businesswoman, motivational speaker and yoga instructor Kanchana Moodliar gave the women food for thought when she spoke about Indians and their addiction to eating — especially the habit of discussing or thinking about the next meal before finishing the first one. She got the women out of their chairs and demonstrated a few basic yoga and meditation techniques to ward off stress. CRACKED UP: Comedian Ashley Govender had great fun ripping off Moodliar’s presentation and joking about the consequences of women not feeding their husbands.
Then came the competition to decide on the best outfit in the afternoon’s “bring on the bling” theme. Shashi Somara, eye- catching in a shocking-pink sari with a homemade necklace featuring a shoe, bag, banknotes and letters that spelt out “woman”, was the winner.
To cheers and applause, she told the audience that “W” stood for woman, “O” for obviously organised, “M” for mothers or mistresses, “A” for all-rounder and “N” for naturally nice or nag bags. SHE SAID IT: Lions member Krishni Naidoo received a trophy for services to the organisation.
“If I had known I was receiving this award, I would have worn a shorter dress,” laughed the miniwearing Naidoo. OVERALL: An uplifting, informative and fun event, which ended with the women dancing the rest of the afternoon away.
