Rajbansi family report son’s teacher to police

Hills preschool teacher might face an assault charge for allegedly hitting the five-year-old grandson of late politician Amichand Rajbansi.

Vimal Rajbansi, the son of the former Minority Front leader, said his wife, Sonia van Eck, had filed assault charges against Teletubbies Montessori teacher and owner Sherita Tulsi for hitting their son, Ethen, across the face.

Rajbansi said his wife first realised the boy had been assaulted when he returned home from school on Thursday with swollen finger marks on his left cheek.

“He was very unhappy and said he didn’t want to go back to school. When my wife confronted the teacher, she said it was a long day and it wasn’t very serious. The principal confirmed that she had smacked my child in a fit of rage.”

Tulsi declined to comment, saying: “I am not well, I have a headache.”

Rajbansi said he was upset that two doctors he took the child to did not attend to his son. “They refused to treat my child and instead suggested we should cover it up.”

The two Reservoir Hills doctors spoke to Sunday Times Extra this week. Dr Deenadalayan Gounden said he told Van Eck to take the child to hospital. Dr Krishnaswami Ramiah said he did not attend to the child because he did not want to be drawn into the matter. He advised the family to forget about the matter.

Rajbansi said he had informed Childline and the Education Department.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge confirmed that a case of assault had been opened and was being investigated by the Sydenham police. “No arrest has been made at this stage,” he said.
