My Kind of Holiday

-

Where did you spend your last holiday?

Arniston, in the Cape.

What was the best thing you did there?

Swim in the sea. It means a lot to us Joburgers.

Your favourite city abroad, and why?

New York. It’s as anxious as I am. I like that.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

Central Park play area. Makes me wish I was a kid again.

What should they not bother with? Why?

The Empire State building. Buy a post card and move on.

What was your best holiday, ever?

Zanzibar. Bliss (and the best Pina Colada this side of the equator).

What was your worst holiday ever? Why?

Knysna Lagoon boat trip. Sea sick then flu then tummy bug.

What is the worst hotel you’ve stayed in?

In Vranje, South Serbia. There was literally an open sewer line in my bathroom.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday, or pinched from a hotel?

I say nothing until my lawyer gets here.

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

My daughter Scarlett. At five, it’s all just one big adventure.

Your favourite SA destination, and why?

Cape Town. My family is there and I like seeing them. It’s also a pretty cool place to hang out.

Your favourite restaurant, anywhere?

Nobu at the One&Only Hotel in Cape Town. But it’s only my favourite when production is paying.

What is the most exotic dish you’ve ever eaten on holiday (or anywhere)?

Swamp veggies in Cambodia.

One place you want to see before you die?

China. No, India. Ok. No, wait. Mongolia. There are many places I want to see before I die.

Have you had any embarrassing moments as a traveller?

In Colorado, I genuinely mistook a massage parlour for a place one could get a massage.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

Don’t ever stop.

One destination that’s a “never again”?

Vranje.
