Mistress of a malt whisky
Triya Govender is brand manager for Martell and Glenlivet at Pernod Ricard South Africa. She tells Margaret Harris that her studies have improved her ability to multitask
What does your job as brand manager involve?
For the most part, it’s about understanding who the people who drink and aspire to my brands are, what drives their choices and how I can best connect with them. It’s also about driving value for the business by looking for opportunities to grow my brands. The job involves lots of collaboration and project management and it demands a problem-solving attitude and creativity.
What were you doing before?
I’ve been in the fast-moving consumer goods industry in similar roles since 2007. Before I joined Pernod Ricard South Africa, I was the global marketing manager for a leading cider brand.
What was your first job?
My very first job was when I was still at university — I was a sales assistant at The Body Shop.
My first job out of university was as an online ad operator for Microsoft.
What training do you have and how does it help you do your job?
I studied marketing management, but have also pursued — and continue to pursue — studies in project management and strategic planning.
Beyond the technical skills I have acquired, I’ve also learnt how to think critically, which I apply to my daily work to ensure I continuously improve — build better and new ideas. My studies have also strengthened my ability to multitask, which is so necessary in my job.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always wanted to be an archaeologist. I think it goes back to my interest in understanding people. I loved (and still do) history and was drawn to this idea of understanding worlds gone before me.
Your industry could be described as traditionally all-male — has this hindered you at all?
Not at all. I don’t believe gender determines skill or ability.
Excluding Glenlivet, what is your favourite whisky?
I’d have to say Jameson; it’s an easy-drinking whisky. I also really like its maverick personality.
What meal goes best with Glenlivet?
For me, The Glenlivet 12 Year Old is best enjoyed with foods that have a bit of bite to them.
What makes you good at your job?
I believe that my passion for finding authentic ways to connect with the people who love, like or are interested in my brand makes me good at this job.
