DJs drive fun at the Pops

- JEROME CORNELIUS

A GOLF club with white picket fences and rolling green lawns hardly seemed the ideal spot for this year’s first Pop Bottles Cape Town party last Sunday.

One of South Africa’s biggest outdoor events, the party is held at various locations in South Africa throughout the year and features some of the biggest DJs and performers.

Previous Cape Town venues have included the slick Shimmy Beach Club, where the party set must have seemed less out of place than at this “unhip” location.

Apparently some golfers agreed, with a few late-afternoon players leaving the River Club Golf Course in Observatory in disgust after being confronted with girls in high heels poking holes in the grass.

The fun started early as partygoers played music and drank in their cars in the parking lot before grabbing the shuttle to the venue nearby.

But as the last golfers left, the crowd slowly got into the groove on the dance floor, which was fenced off from the golf course.

The style was street couture, reminiscent of Maboneng — upmarket street wear, practical with graphics and solid colours. Basketball tops worn as dresses danced comfortably alongside the black frocks worn by glam girls, and guys in blazers and vintage shorts.

Rapper Miss Celaneous com- bined retail with vintage with a black fitted top she had made herself and shorts and a bag from a store in Braamfontein.

The crowd heated up as the sun went down, with hip-hop, rap and house — from DJs Milkshake, Vigilante, Loyd and Dimplez — keeping the cool kids bouncing.

First-timer Sihle Mfenyana, a politics student, said, while twerking: “I love the music. I’ll definitely come again.”

The infamous Cape Town wind was the main problem, with no relief outside the sparse VIP areas. Colourful plastic cups were blown around as partygoers clamoured for drinks, including pricey tipple like Hennessy.

But as drunken poses were held and weave strengths were tested, the crowd partied faithfully through the night.
