Sharks breakfast has female fans in a frenzy

- SUTHENTIRA GOVENDER

IT could have been mistaken for a risqué ladies’ night, given the gyrating hunks, excitable women and raunchy games.

It was, in fact, the much-vaunted Sharks ladies’ breakfast, which brought about 400 zealous female fans to the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World on Wednesday morning.

Titled “50 Shades of Black and White”, the event was part of a fundraising drive for Durban’s homeless.

The 7am kick-off was no deterrent for the fans, who turned out in their trendiest black-and-white ensembles, in keeping with the dress code and the team’s official colours.

A hush fell over the room, but only momentarily, when the players, a good few of them Springboks too, including Pat Lambie, Ryan Kankowski, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira and JP Pietersen, made their grand entrance.

Away from the rugby field, the Sharks cleaned up well in their black golf shirts and jeans, and they certainly know how to turn on the charm.

The fans had paid for the honour of sharing breakfast with the famous sportsmen and “getting to know them a little better”, as master of ceremonies and regular ladies’-night host Damon Beard put it.

Breakfast included croissants, pastries, fruit skewers, cold coffee and smoked salmon bagels, among other dishes.

The table centre pieces were more of a talking point — long mannequin legs sheathed in fishnet stockings.

The women were thrilled by the interactive games with their favourite players, including a version of “Trivial Pursuit”. This one involved many 50 Shades of Grey questions.

There was no shortage of buff bodies on display. Sharks scrumhalf Cobus Reinach showed off his abs and Pietersen his rear as they entertained the enthusiastic crowd with their dance moves.

The main purpose, however, was not forgotten: R8 000 was raised in the auction of a Sharks-signed jersey.
