Killings at police stations

On Tuesday, a 76-year-old man drove himself to the Umhlali police station in KwaZulu-Natal where he shot and killed himself. He had a suicide letter on him, and an inquest docket has been opened.

On Monday night, a police officer was shot at the Dunnottar police station on Johannesbu­rg’s East Rand when two men walked in and opened fire. He is in critical condition, a police spokesman said.

In January this year, Constable Mxolisi Dingiswayo and Warrant Officer Paulos Maqeba were shot dead by a suspect they had not searched but had brought into the Johannesbu­rg Central police station.

On January 6, Gabriel de Silva shot dead his wife, Lana Marques, at the Parkview police station in Johannesbu­rg after a domestic dispute. He then killed himself.

In October 2014, a police officer was shot dead with his own firearm by a drunk suspect at the Pinetown police station in KwaZuluNat­al.

In September 2014, a policewoma­n was taken to hospital after being shot by a 25-year-old man who walked into the Durban Point police station. The suspect was shot in both arms in an attempt to disarm him. Police were unsure about the motive, but said the man had entered the station the day before begging for money.

In April 2012, Constable Vutivi Mabunda shot dead his ex-girlfriend, Tsholanang Kgaladi, at the Moot police station in Pretoria before turning the gun on himself.

In April 2011, Jeanette Odendaal was shot dead outside the Kempton Park police station by Sergeant Manape Phineas Kgoale, who believed she was a hijacker. Kgoale was charged with culpable homicide and jailed for five years. —
