Another devil for ‘Idols’ hands

- GABI MBELE

MOVE over, Mr Mean — otherwise known as Randall Abrahams. Somizi Mhlongo is making his debut as an Idols judge on our TV screens tonight.

The flamboyant singer, actor and choreographer has promised to spice up the panel of veteran judges Unathi Msengana, Gareth Cliff and the notoriously nasty Abrahams with his out-there style, colourful hairdos and quirky comments.

He certainly seems likely to have jaws dropping often, as his tonguelashings pierce even deeper than Mr Mean’s.

At one point during filming, Mhlongo told a contestant: “You’ve got a beautiful voice but a dishwashing-water personality.” That statement took even rude Randall by surprise.

Despite such dream-crushing commentary, Mhlongo insists he is sweet — but direct when necessary.

“I am definitely a mixture of all three judges on the show,” he said. “I thought I was going to be gentle, but I found myself being me — so honest. If I don’t like you, I don’t. If I do, then I do. Those who rock my boat get that from me and I jump on top of the counter. If they are boring, I tell them.”

It seems tonight’s first episode will reveal just how full the other judges’ hands will be with the new guy: Mhlongo will be seen squeezing Cliff’s cheeks and aiming to soften up Abrahams with a hug.

M-Net publicist Lani Lombard said: “Somizi is a fantastic new addition to the judging panel. He is an all-round performer and showman and he knows exactly what it takes to make it in the South African entertainment industry. His flare and expertise will go a long way in this season.”
