From banking to radio with an eye on the hip-hop prize
Katlego ’Kat’ Mohoaduba co-presents a radio show on Cliff Central with Arye Kellman. She explains to Margaret Harris how beauty pageants helped her develop self-confidence
Tell me about your work as a radio presenter on Cliff Central?
I am a co-presenter with Arye Kellman on a show called #Kellman. It involves me assisting Arye in hosting the show, so I read tweets and ask some of the questions when we have guest celebrities in the studio.
My favourite part of the show is interacting with listeners via WeChat. They can send pictures, questions and voice notes to us, which makes the show so much more personal and interactive.
Cliff Central is a talkshow radio station, so we rarely play music, and the show is all about interacting with listeners and getting their point of view on the topics we’re discussing. What do you enjoy most about working on radio?
Being able to interact with people with different opinions and meet media personalities. I have found that there is more to a person when
you eventually get to meet them.
You have also done some TV work. What have you been part of?
I have been on reality shows, including Big Brother Mzansi, which was my debut on reality TV. I also appeared on a show called Diski Divas, which is a reality show about footballers’ wives and girlfriends. What did you want to be when you were a child?
I wanted to be a paediatrician because it would enable me to work with kids and be a doctor. I eventually changed my mind when I realised I was very squeamish at the sight of blood and couldn’t imagine drawing blood from a child. How does your experience in beauty pageants help the work you do today?
The one thing I learnt from beauty pageants is the importance of self-confidence. When you are confident and comfortable in your own skin — especially in the industry I’m in — you are not as easily affected by what others say about you. You have also worked in a bank and in advertising — why did you move on from those positions?
I’ve never considered myself a 9-5 kind of person. I’m a creative and love entertaining people, so it was only a matter of time before I moved to the entertainment industry. What achievement are you most proud of?
Definitely being on radio, but I still haven’t reached my goal of having my own show yet. It’s a work in progress. What other career would you like to pursue if you had the chance?
It would be music because I love that messages of hope, love and joy can be expressed through it. I don’t have any music training, but I’ve been thinking about getting a voice coach. The sort of music genre I would go into would be hip-hop. I love the culture of hip-hop, especially now that the hip-hop scene in South Africa is growing and being recognised.
Which qualities do you have that
make you good at what you do?
Humility, because it is important that people see me as their equal and feel that they are able to communicate with me.
