Mankayi has a five-star night at the SAMAs
HIS hit single Nomvula took South Africa by storm last year and singer Nathi Mankayi was floating on air last night after scooping five awards at the 22nd annual South African Music Awards.
He took home awards in the categories for best R&B/soul/reggae album, best newcomer, best male artist, best full-track music download and best-selling album of the year.
At the Metro FM awards earlier this year, Nomvula won song of the year and he won best African pop album for Buyelekhaya.
Hot on his heels last night, with four gongs, was DJ and producer Black Coffee, whose hit Dance Again was widely played.
He won best dance album, best engineered album, album of the year and international achievement awards.
Gospel star Sfiso Ncwane and Durban house kwaito group Durban Nyts tied in third spot with three awards.
Singer Zonke took home the best female artist award, beating Zahara, Judith Sephuma, Fifi Cooper and Karen Zoid.
Roll Up rapper Emtee triumphed as best rapper, leaving Kid X, Da Les, Riky Rick and Zakwe emptyhanded.
Designers Quiteria and George dominated the red carpet, dressing three of South Africa’s sexiest celebs: Boity Thulo, Lerato Kganyago and Thando Thabethe.
Thulo wore a turquoise hand beaded dress. Kganyago was in a black and gold floor length mesh lace dress, while Thabethe wore a lilac dress which didn’t leave a lot to the imagination.
MetroFM presenter Pearl Modiadie took “the future is here” theme to heart and referred to her gown as a “walking red disco ball”.
Singer Nandi Mngoma also worked the theme in a black and silver floor length dress, while rapper Nomuzi Mabena looked like a princess in a sensational emerald green meshed gown.
