HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAVEL?
As often as I can, which adds up to about six times a year. Usually for work. YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF TRAVELLING ABROAD? I was 18 and I went to England and Germany. England was boring as hell and Germany … Germany was heaven. I was in Berlin staying in the tallest building in Europe at the time. There’s something so special about Germany in winter. WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A PERFECT HOLIDAY? Money, friends, alcohol, nature. FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Edinburgh is a classy, classy city. It’s got amazing architecture, art, fashion and people — and some dodgy Scottish deep-fried food. There are also great bands every week. What must a first-time visitor see there? “Edinburgh’s Shame”/The National Monument. It’s an unfinished monument on Calton Hill, but it’s one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. Also, I adore the Scott Monument. Dark, Gothic architecture always gets me. BEST HOLIDAY EVER? Anywhere where the rand is strong. So, Mongolia maybe? Kidding. My favourite holiday experience was my road trip through South Africa for my show Food, Booze and Tattoos. Nine people. One Quantum, 35 days. Now that’s testing, tasty and exciting.
MOST RELAXING DESTINATION?
Fiskardo on Kefalonia in Greece. It was in equal parts aquamarine, tasty, relaxing. FAVOURITE RESTAURANT? I’d have to say Dorrance. It’s in Cape Town city, which in itself isn’t that interesting, but it’s actually a winery in the city that they convert into a restaurant at night. It has amazing food and superb wine. BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE? Don’t panic. It will be OK. Your freak-out will not help your situation. Also, be nice to everyone. It really helps! WHAT’S YOUR ONE TRAVEL ESSENTIAL? There’s not just one, but I will give special mention to my Kindle and my toothbrush. Both have saved me on my travels. WHERE NEXT? India? Brazil? Not sure, but I’m keen to go wherever the wind blows.
