I grew up with British TV shows, which exposed me to the British crime dramas my parents are quite fond of. It’s an interest I inherited to a point. They tend to be less flashy and overall more miserable and dour than their US counterparts. The Brits love to create cop show characters with some kind of mundane, real-world problem to deal with in addition to fixing other people’s problems. DCI Jane Tennison (Helen Mirren), the star of Prime Suspect, is the epitome of this. In this season she is transferred to Manchester and takes a while to adjust.
