Durban is still smoking

SMOKE will fill Durban’s air for the next few days as a factory inferno smoulders south of the city.

The fire, on South Coast Road, broke out on Friday and engulfed one of the biggest warehouses in the southern hemisphere.

It took 400 firemen working 15-hour shifts to put out the main blaze.

Smoke from the fire in the 210 000m² wax-production factory was fanned by strong winds and blanketed parts of the city. It was visible from 60km away.

Nearby residents woke up yesterday to swimming pool surfaces covered with a dark, oily substance.

Durban fire chief Enoch Mchunu said it could still be a while before all the flames were put out.

Mchunu said 12 fire engines, three water carriers and a number of special vehicles were used.
