#bestcities for Millennials

- TRAVELLING NEWS by ELIZABETH SLEITH

EUROPEAN cities dominate a new list of the most millennialfriendly destinations around the world, with Amsterdam coming out on top. We’re not shocked either.

The ranking was compiled by Nestpick, an aggregator of furnished apartments used primarily by students.

To compile the list, they looked at standard measurements like affordability, openness, tolerance, employment, and transportation, but also considered factors pertinent to the age group, including the number of nightclubs and annual music festivals, the affordability of beer, LGBT-friendliness and ease of access to contraception.

There’s also an Apple-store ranking, which measures the number of Apple stores per capita — an indicator of a city’s technological engagement. Internet speed and fitness opportunities factor in too.

On their website, Nestpick explains: “In order for a city to rank highly, we determined that it must have a thriving business eco-structure, allow affordable access to the essentials that young people need to survive, have a sense of openness and tolerance that is increasingly prevalent in the 21st century, and lastly, offer a chance for Millennials to kick back and relax. The results reveal the definitive list of the best cities for Millennials this 2017.”

Amsterdam performed particularly well in areas such as its LGBT scene, immigration tolerance, festivals, start-up scene and tourism.

Cape Town is the only South African city — actually, the only African city — on the list, at No 77.

The Mother City scored highly on factors including gender equality, affordable food and beer, plenty of music festivals and a large number of start-up companies, thus work opportunities.

Surprisingly, London comes in only at 16.

The highest-ranking North American city is Vancouver, which squeezed into the 10th spot, followed by Montreal (15th).

The highest-ranked US city is Austin, Texas, at No 41, and Bangkok is the top-scoring Asian city at No 47.
