CORPORATE and commercial law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr has made some executive appointmen­ts. John Webber has been promoted to head of the real estate practice, and Gerhard Badenhorst has been appointed director in the tax and exchange-control practice in Johannesbu­rg.

Webber began his career in Bloemfonte­in before moving to Johannesbu­rg to join EFK Tucker as head of its conveyanci­ng department. In November 2000, he joined Hofmeyr, Herbstein and Gihwala (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) as an associate, was promoted to senior associate in 2001 and became a director in 2003.

He specialise­s in commercial property, and low-cost and affordable housing developmen­t.

He also acted on behalf of both the provincial government of Gauteng and private developers in the delivery of RDP houses, and has attended to more than 12 500 transfers for housing beneficiar­ies.

Badenhorst is a chartered accountant who specialise­s in VAT, and has been practising as a tax profession­al for 26 years.

He advises on a wide range of VAT matters in various industries and has been recognised by a number of internatio­nal publicatio­ns as a leading VAT adviser.

He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountant­s VAT subcommitt­ee and is also an ad hoc member of the VAT subcommitt­ee of the Davis tax committee.

He is a guest lecturer on VAT for various tax courses presented at the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersr­and. DATA management and security company M2TD has appointed Melusi Gumbi chief operating officer. Gumbi joins M2TD from Khauleza IT Solutions, where he was the executive responsibl­e for ICT operations.

Gumbi has more than 20 years’ business experience. He has an MBL from Unisa, a BTech in knowledge management and a national diploma in electrical engineerin­g.

At present, he is working towards an MCom in business management.

Gumbi will be responsibl­e for the day-to-day management of the business, which, in addition to all the standard operationa­l functions, will include management of the company’s department­s such as security, networks, human resources, internal IT, storage, and sales and marketing.

M2TD is 100% owned by black women. LAW firm ENSafrica has appointed technology, media and telecommun­ications law specialist Wilmari Strachan as a director in its TMT practice in South Africa.

Strachan has 15 years’ experience, and specialise­s in informatio­n and communicat­ions technology law, including the related technical, commercial, compliance, business, customer and performanc­e management aspects.

She has a special interest in telecommun­ications, internet and e-commerce law, as well as software and app developmen­t.

She was previously the head of legal services at a South African telecommun­ications company and has experience in the technology, internet and telecommun­ications legislativ­e and regulatory environmen­t.
