CORPORATE and commercial law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr has made some executive appointments. John Webber has been promoted to head of the real estate practice, and Gerhard Badenhorst has been appointed director in the tax and exchange-control practice in Johannesburg.
Webber began his career in Bloemfontein before moving to Johannesburg to join EFK Tucker as head of its conveyancing department. In November 2000, he joined Hofmeyr, Herbstein and Gihwala (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) as an associate, was promoted to senior associate in 2001 and became a director in 2003.
He specialises in commercial property, and low-cost and affordable housing development.
He also acted on behalf of both the provincial government of Gauteng and private developers in the delivery of RDP houses, and has attended to more than 12 500 transfers for housing beneficiaries.
Badenhorst is a chartered accountant who specialises in VAT, and has been practising as a tax professional for 26 years.
He advises on a wide range of VAT matters in various industries and has been recognised by a number of international publications as a leading VAT adviser.
He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants VAT subcommittee and is also an ad hoc member of the VAT subcommittee of the Davis tax committee.
He is a guest lecturer on VAT for various tax courses presented at the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand. DATA management and security company M2TD has appointed Melusi Gumbi chief operating officer. Gumbi joins M2TD from Khauleza IT Solutions, where he was the executive responsible for ICT operations.
Gumbi has more than 20 years’ business experience. He has an MBL from Unisa, a BTech in knowledge management and a national diploma in electrical engineering.
At present, he is working towards an MCom in business management.
Gumbi will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the business, which, in addition to all the standard operational functions, will include management of the company’s departments such as security, networks, human resources, internal IT, storage, and sales and marketing.
M2TD is 100% owned by black women. LAW firm ENSafrica has appointed technology, media and telecommunications law specialist Wilmari Strachan as a director in its TMT practice in South Africa.
Strachan has 15 years’ experience, and specialises in information and communications technology law, including the related technical, commercial, compliance, business, customer and performance management aspects.
She has a special interest in telecommunications, internet and e-commerce law, as well as software and app development.
She was previously the head of legal services at a South African telecommunications company and has experience in the technology, internet and telecommunications legislative and regulatory environment.
