THE Prime Minister, Mr Vorster, is tightening up discipline inside the Nationalis­t Party. The immediate reason for this action is the outburst by a Nationalis­t MP., Mr. Piet Marais, a fortnight ago against the “big shiny cars” which Cabinet Ministers and Government M.P.s were driving.

But the matter goes deeper. Since Mr. Vorster became Prime Minister, more and more leading Nationalis­ts have been kicking over the traces.

The difficulty is that it is almost impossible to tell where the legitimate expression of valid difference­s of opinion ends and the activities of the party’s Right wing begins. —
