1907 The world’s first surf lifesaving club was founded at Bondi in Sydney, Australia. 1913 First profession­al lifeguard awards were instituted in South Africa. 1927 Formation of Durban Surf, the first surf lifesaving club in South Africa. 1930 Pirates Lifesaving Club was founded in the Western Cape. 1955-6 First black lifeguards employed at the “African” (Battery) Beach. 1991 Beaches in South Africa were opened to all.
