The street of death

- By Carl Court

The street that never ends was closed this week. La Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain, is a tree-lined pedestrian mall, which Spanish poet Federico García Lorca described as “the only street in the world which I wish would never end”. It is crowded during the tourist season, which was why it became a target this week for terrorists who drove a van through a throng of people, killing 14 and injuring dozens more. Since then people have been gathering at the site of the atrocity to pay tribute to the dead. About eight hours after the attack, a car drove through groups of people in Cambrils, 110km southeast of Barcelona. A woman was killed and six others injured. Spanish police have killed five suspected terrorists and arrested another four. A 10th suspect is still on the run.
