KZN to probe elite school over ‘racism’

- By MATTHEW SAVIDES and BONGANI MTHETHWA

The KwaZulu-Natal education department wants a “full-scale investigation” into racism at Maritzburg College, one of the country’s elite public schools, after three uniformed pupils were hauled up for disciplinary action for being pictured carrying T-shirts with pro-EFF messages.

An advocate is readying to defend the three boys. The picture of them surfaced on Friday and has since gone viral.

South African-born former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who attended the school, was one of the first to comment on the picture: “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? Total disrespect for a once GREAT school! Are you joking?!?! [sic]”

The school responded: “We are aware of it and it certainly is not acceptable to us at all.” The school’s tweet has been deleted. The Maritzburg College governing body, commenting through lawyer Jaco van der Merwe, confirmed the pending disciplinary.

KwaZulu-Natal education department spokesman Kwazi Mthethwa said: “We’re going to have a full-scale investigation.”
