Cocaine found in airport bathroom
Security staff at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday found three bricks of cocaine believed to be linked to a woman who was found on Friday with just over 1kg of the drug concealed in her underwear.
After detaining the suspect on Friday‚ security staff continued searching yesterday, said airport spokeswoman Leigh Gunkel-Keuler.
A cleaner called security staff to a women’s bathroom close to the security checkpoint after finding suspicious packages at the bottom of a sanitary bin.
“It was established that the packages contained 1.34kg of cocaine, which was handed to the investigating officer of the South African Police Service. Investigations are continuing,” GunkelKeuler said.
Airport general manager Bongiwe Pityi congratulated the security staff and the cleaning contractors.
Gunkel-Keuler said: “For our staff‚ it is always pleasing when simply doing their work in the normal way yields results. We’re also especially pleased to see in this incident a practical demonstration of the training that all staff‚ including cleaning contractors‚ receive.”
