The distance in metres between the high seas and the plank, which guests can walk pirate-style on Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Breakaway liner.

Perched high on the 16th deck of this gargantuan ship, the plank is 8m long and a mere 20cm wide, meaning it will take some mettle to emulate the walk of shame made by Johnny Depp’s character Jack Sparrow, pictured, in the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Fortunately, while proper pirates walked the plank to drop into the ocean, the cruise liner’s plank walk is complete with a harness, so those who fall will merely dangle for an unnerving moment, rather than sink to their eternal slumber at the bottom of Davy Jones’ locker.

The ship also has a waterslide that sees riders dropped from a trapdoor into freefall.

The ship is cruising the Caribbean but will make a transatlantic voyage next year to ply Europe’s waters for the spring/summer season.
