SLEEP WITH THE FISHES

-

The Manta Resort on Pemba island, Zanzibar, has an Underwater Room, a turquoise bubble where guests sleep below the surface while rainbows of reef fish glide past.

The Swedish-engineered floating structure has three levels, the bedroom being under the sea, with large windows surrounding a double bed and spotlights under the windows which, at night, can be turned on to attract fish and octopuses. The hotel claims that some creatures have even taken up residence around the room, which affords them some protection from predators.

The sea-level floor has a simple living area and bathroom, and the rooftop patio is perfect for sunbathing or taking in the Milky Way at night.

The price tag, of course, is predictably hefty: $1 500 (R20 500) per night for two. themantaresort.com
