DOWN A RABBIT HOLE DOWN UNDER

- By Matthew Vice

It’s that time of year again, when everyone starts thinking about their upcoming holiday leave and stops giving a damn about their jobs, and I don’t blame them: another year is almost over and we all need a break. Unfortunately, this also applies to the people who are supposed to send me info on their upcoming shows — but like I said, not judging. It turns out there’s plenty of good stuff lying around to feature here, starting with a good comedy tonight on M-Net, channel 101, at 8:05pm: Trevor Noah: Welcome to America.

Everyone loves Trevor Noah, right? And if you don’t, well then there’s something wrong with you. Personally, I love me some Trevor Noah, and the title of this stand-up act should tell you everything you need to know: Trevor stands up in front of a Yank audience and tells them what he thinks of their country.

If this is the act I’m thinking of, then I recommend it highly. He finds something funny in everything from the US pronounciation of words to their celebrities to the damn imperial measurement system. I know, I know, it sounds like low-hanging fruit, but you just have to see the way he does it.

And hey, if the stand-up comedy thing doesn’t work out, Trevor could always look into doing voiceover work, because the range of accents and dialects and voices he can adopt is astonishing.

DEGREES OF SEPARATION

On M-Net, channel 101, on Thursday at 10pm we have a new Aussie drama series called Seven Types of Ambiguity, based on a novel of the same name by Elliot Perlman. Just like the novel, the show tells the tale of several people whose lives are connected somehow.

It kicks off with parents Joe (Alex Dimitriades) and Anna (Leeanna Walsman) frantically trying to find their six-year-old son after he is abducted from school.

The culprit, when arrested, turns out to be Anna’s ex-boyfriend Simon (Xavier Samuel). His accomplice is Angela (Andrea Demetriades), who has some kind of connection to Joe.

Also with a stake in the whole affair is Simon’s shrink Dr Klima (Hugo Weaving) and his lawyer Gina (Susie Porter), and Joe’s best friend Mitch (Anthony Hayes).

Confusing? I know. If you plan to follow the show, you might want to get a cork pin board and some red string. From the trailers, it seems like it’s going to be pretty heavy, serious stuff.

HONEYMOON CRUISE (NOT)

Remember the show How to Adventure with Riaan Manser we mentioned a few issues back?

Well, he is back for another stunt, this time with his wife Vasti Geldenhuys who he married last year, after 17 years of being a couple.

And guess what they did for their honeymoon? They rowed across the Pacific Ocean, from California to Hawaii, in a tiny boat. Rowed. Yeah.

The show about the 39-day voyage, Riaan Manser: Pacific Honeymoon, is on the Discovery Channel, channel 121, Tuesday at 8pm.
