The number of eateries awarded stars in the newly released, first-ever Michelin guide to Bangkok.

The French-published guide to the best restaurants in the city names 98 in total, though only 17 of these are awarded the coveted star, the mark of culinary excellence.

No maximum three stars were awarded but there are several two-star nods, most of them upscale Thai or French haute-cuisine establishments.

In this city celebrated for its street food, however, the one star given to Jay Fai seems to have stirred the most excitement.

Named after its septuagenarian chef/owner, known to the locals as Aunti Fai, this popular spot is a true Old Town hole-in-the-wall, where patrons dine on wok-fried dishes at plastic tables spilling out onto the street.

The guide also places 18 establishments in the “Bib Gourmand” category, which recognises spots that offer stellar meals for reasonable prices.
