Chronic insecurity
So paranoid were ANC security guards at the conference, you’d swear Baba kaDuduzane had sent them for a crash course in intimidation up there in Kim Jong-un’s North Korea. During the periods when journalists were allowed to attend plenary sessions, a reporter would not be allowed to visit the loo without an escort. Talking to delegates was a no-no and one reporter almost lost her accreditation to the conference because she made the mistake of greeting her aunt, who was a delegate, when she saw her walking on the other side of a fence that separated the unclean media tribe from those special beings attending the conference. And then one of Hogarth’s colleagues made the mistake of bringing bottled water with him when he went to attend one of the sessions. The guards forced him to drink the water in front of them to prove that it was not a “a dangerous chemical”.
