Oom April Jooste, 101, has been tending his garden in Clanwilliam for more than 50 years and dismisses the current drought as not as bad as the great drought of 1933. ‘That was the worst,’ says Oom April, who would know, having been a teenager at the time. The garden has won him a sustainable farming award. His secret? ‘You plant when it is rain time; if there is not much water, you don’t plant.’
