Academic who paid price for activism

Social anthropolo­gist David Webster, a founder member of the Detainees’ Parents Support Committee, was gunned down outside his Johannesbu­rg home by Ferdi Barnard on May 1 1989. Born in Zimbabwe in 1945, Webster attended Rhodes University, where in 1965 he helped organise a protest against segregated sports matches. He was a human rights activist until his death
