CRUMBS & CREAM

Two entrepreneurial sisters with drive and enthusiasm — and an American idea of turning ice cream into a cookie sandwich — started Crumbs & Cream in Cape Town in 2016. Shahar Ben Artzi and Or Lahat now have two stores, in Cape Town and Joburg, where you create your own personalised ice-cream sarmie by selecting from an array of cookies slathered with ice cream and a topping if desired. I was lured into the tiny store in Illovo, Joburg, by the smell of freshly baked cookies. They offer the perennial favourite choc chip and others like red velvet, milk tart, peanut butter, rainbow and even a vegan one.

I fancied vanilla on a churro base, topped with a choc chip cookie. It comes in a packet with a wide opening for big mouthfuls. It’s VERY sweet — and a hit, if the funky store packed to capacity is anything to go by.
