There’s something so seductive about the aroma of home baking, especially when your New Year’s resolution is to cut back on carbs, so it took some willpower to resist tasting a hot queen cake as I whipped a tray of them out of the oven. Golden brown with voluminous, (the secret is not to overmix) perfectly rounded peaks, the 12 almost perfect cakes had taken just 25 minutes from start to finish, with minimal washing up — two mixing bowls, a wooden spoon. The new Snowflake Queen Cakes Flour Mix is convenient in that all the dry ingredients are ready mixed — flour, sugar and raising agent — and it’s easy to use.

The mix is a good product to have in the store cupboard in case you have to whip up something for a forgotten school function or unexpected visitors, and at R17.99 for a 1kg bag, it is a fair buy. The instructions are simple and measurements in cups for those who can’t bear baking in millilitres and grams. The range also includes magwenya (vetkoek) and dombolo flour mixes.
